Clark Atlanta University is a private, primarily African American institution of higher learning in Atlanta, Georgia. It is the largest of the United Negro College Fund institutions. The university is also the largest institution in the Atlanta University Center system.
The university was formed in 1988 by the merger of two established colleges, Atlanta University and Clark College. The American Missionary Association founded Atlanta University in 1865. Until consolidation, Atlanta University was the nation’s oldest graduate institution serving a largely African American student body. The Freedmen’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church (now the United Methodist Church) founded Clark College in 1869 as a Black liberal arts college. Well-known graduates include educator Marva Collins and poet and songwriter James Weldon Johnson.
