Colorado School of Mines

Colorado School of Mines is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Golden, Colorado. George M. Randall, a missionary bishop of the Episcopal Church of Colorado, founded the School of Mines in 1873. The school’s operating costs were too high for the church, and so the school came under the control of the Colorado Territorial Legislature in 1874. It became the first state institution of higher learning when Colorado became a state in 1876.

Early programs at the Colorado School of Mines focused on gold and silver and the analysis of ores. Today, the school focuses on teaching and research in applied science and engineering. The athletic teams of the Colorado School of Mines are called the Orediggers.
