Creighton University is a private, Roman Catholic institution of higher learning in Omaha, Nebraska. It is affiliated with the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Mary Lucretia Wareham Creighton left instructions in her will to build Creighton University as a memorial to her husband, Edward Creighton, builder of the transcontinental telegraph. Mary died in 1876. The university opened in 1878 and was associated with the Jesuits. John Creighton, Edward’s brother, continued to contribute to the university until his death in 1907. The university’s athletic teams are called the Bluejays. Well-known graduates include baseball player Bob Gibson.
