Davidson College is an independent, liberal arts college in Davidson, North Carolina. It is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church but welcomes students of all religious backgrounds.
A group of North Carolina Presbyterians called the Concord Presbytery founded Davidson College in 1837 as a manual labor institute for men. The college was named for William Lee Davidson, a general who had died in 1781 in the American Revolution. His son William Lee Davidson II provided land for the college campus.
Davidson has been coeducational since 1974. Noteworthy graduates of Davidson include novelist Patricia Cornwell, United States Secretary of State Dean Rusk, and U.S. President Woodrow Wilson.
