University, Duquesne << doo KAYN, >> is a Roman Catholic institution in Pittsburgh. In addition to degrees in the liberal arts, Duquesne offers degrees in business, education, environmental science, health science, law, music, nursing, and pharmacy.
The university was founded in 1878 by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (the Spiritans), as the Pittsburgh Catholic College of the Holy Ghost. Its name was changed to Duquesne University of the Holy Ghost, the school’s full name, in 1911. The new name honored the Marquis Duquesne, who in the 1700’s was a French governor of New France, the French colonial empire in North America.
