Florida Atlantic University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Boca Raton, Florida. The university is a part of the State University System of Florida. The state of Florida established the university in 1961. Classes began in 1964. Other Florida Atlantic University campuses are in Dania Beach, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Jupiter, and Port St. Lucie. The university’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is in Fort Pierce.
The original campus in Boca Raton is on a former United States Army airfield, which is home to burrowing owls and a variety of other wildlife. In 1971, the Audubon Society designed the Boca Raton campus as a burrowing owl sanctuary. The university’s athletic teams, called the Owls, are named for the birds.
