Florida International University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Miami, Florida. The Florida Legislature founded the university in 1965. When classes began in 1972, the university offered only upper-division and graduate programs. Classes for first-year students and sophomores were added in 1981. The university operates three campuses in Miami: the University Park Campus, the Biscayne Bay Campus, and a site offering graduate professional degrees in downtown Miami. It also has several academic sites near Miami, in Broward County and Miami-Dade County. Florida International University is part of the State University System of Florida. The university’s athletic teams are called the Golden Panthers.
