Franklin and Marshall College

Franklin and Marshall College is a private, coeducational liberal arts school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was formed in 1853, when Marshall College moved to Lancaster and merged with Franklin College. Franklin College, named for the statesman and inventor Benjamin Franklin, had been established in Lancaster in 1787. Marshall College was established at Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, in 1835 and was named in honor of Chief Justice John Marshall.

Franklin and Marshall College grants only bachelor’s degrees. Its sports teams are nicknamed the Diplomats. Well-known graduates include playwright James Lapine, film director Franklin Schaffner, and actors Roy Scheider and R. Treat Williams.
