Haverford College

Haverford College is a private, liberal arts school in Haverford, Pennsylvania. It was founded as a men’s college in 1833 by members of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as the Quakers. The school first admitted women in 1980. Haverford is the oldest institution of higher education in North America with Quaker roots.

Haverford College grants bachelor’s degrees in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The college has a cooperative arrangement with nearby Bryn Mawr College that allows students at either school to take courses on either campus. Haverford also has cooperative arrangements with Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania.

Haverford’s sports teams are nicknamed the Fords. Well-known graduates of Haverford College include humorist Dave Barry, illustrator Maxfield Parrish, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Joseph H. Taylor, Jr., and authors Nicholson D. Baker and Frank Conroy.
