Lehigh University is a coeducational private institution of higher learning in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1865 by Asa Packer, a Pennsylvania businessman who owned a railroad and extensive coal operations. Packer developed the plan for the school with William Bacon Stevens, an Episcopal bishop, who served as the first president of Lehigh’s board of trustees.
Lehigh’s sports teams are nicknamed the Mountain Hawks or Engineers. Well-known graduates of the university include astronaut Terry Hart and automobile industry executives Lee Iacocca and Roger Penske.
