Louisville, University of

Louisville, University of, is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Louisville, Kentucky. The university traces its history to 1798, with the founding of Jefferson Seminary. In 1844, the city of Louisville established the Louisville Collegiate Institute, which inherited property from Jefferson Seminary. The university adopted its present name in 1846, when the Louisville Collegiate Institute united with the Louisville Medical Institute. The University of Louisville joined the state university system in 1970.

The university’s main campus is Belknap Campus, just outside of the downtown area. The Health Sciences Center, in downtown Louisville, houses the university’s health-related programs and the University of Louisville Hospital. The University Center for Continuing and Professional Education is at the Shelby Campus, in Jefferson County. The university also offers courses at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Well-known graduates of the University of Louisville include John Logan, a general in the American Civil War; playwright Marsha Norman; football player Johnny Unitas; and basketball player Wes Unseld. The university’s athletic teams are called the Cardinals. The athletic program is especially noted for its successful basketball teams.
