Macalester College

Macalester College is a privately supported, nondenominational liberal arts college in St. Paul, Minnesota. Edward Duffield Neill, a Presbyterian minister, founded the college in 1874. It is named for Charles Macalester, a Philadelphia businessman whose donations enabled Neill to start the college. The Scottish heritage of the early donor became a part of the school’s identity. In 1948, the chief of the Clan of McAlister in Scotland adopted Macalester College into the clan. Today, the student bagpipe band and Highland dancers wear the authentic tartan of the McAlister clan. One well-known graduate of Macalester College is Kofi Annan, the Ghanaian diplomat who served as secretary-general of the United Nations. The college’s athletic teams are called the Scots.
