Miami, University of

Miami, University of, is a private, independent institution of higher learning in Coral Gables, Florida, a suburb of Miami. The university was chartered in 1925 by a group of citizens who wanted an institution of higher learning in their community. The first classes were held in 1926. Other campuses include the Rosenstiel Campus, the Medical Campus, and the South Campus.

Well-known graduates of the University of Miami include Maurice Ferre, the first Hispanic mayor of Miami; basketball player Rick Barry; singer Gloria Estefan; musicians Jon Secada and Bruce Hornsby; and photographers Arnold Newman and David Douglas Duncan.

The University of Miami is known for its successful football and baseball programs. The university’s athletic teams are called the Miami Hurricanes. According to tradition, the Hurricanes were named for a devastating windstorm that postponed the opening football game in 1926.
