Murray State University

Murray State University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Murray, Kentucky. Attorney Rainey T. Wells founded the university. He located contributors, provided a temporary plan for the school grounds, and urged the Kentucky General Assembly to build an institution in Murray. The state of Kentucky established the school in 1922 as a college to train teachers. Classes began in 1923. It became a university in 1966.

The National Scouting Museum, the official museum of the Boy Scouts of America, is on the campus. Off-campus centers include the Wickliffe Mounds Research Center, an archaeological study area in Wickliffe. The university’s athletic teams are called the Racers.
