New Jersey Institute of Technology is a public, state-supported university in Newark, New Jersey. The institute emphasizes education and research in a wide variety of fields that deal with developments in science.
In 1881, Newark Technical School was founded through cooperative efforts of the state of New Jersey, the city of Newark, and local industry. The school admitted its first students in 1884. It began granting degrees in 1919 and later changed its name to Newark College of Engineering. In 1975, the state chose Newark College as its site for a new school of architecture. With the addition of the new school, the institution adopted its present name and began functioning as a state university.
