New Orleans, University of

New Orleans, University of, is a public institution of higher learning in New Orleans. It is part of the Louisiana State University System. In 1956, the Louisiana Legislature founded the university as Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Classes began in 1958. The University of New Orleans adopted its present name in 1974. In addition to its main campus on Lake Ponchartrain, the school operates a campus in New Orleans, to the east of the main campus, and a campus in Metairie. The university’s athletic teams are called the Privateers.
