North Texas, University of

North Texas, University of, is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Denton, Texas. Joshua C. Chilton founded the school in 1890 as the Texas Normal College and Teachers’ Training Institute and became its first president. The school changed its name several times before it adopted its present name in 1988. The University of North Texas is part of the University of North Texas (UNT) System, which includes the UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth and UNT Dallas. The university’s athletic teams are called the Mean Green.
