Northern Colorado, University of

Northern Colorado, University of, is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Greeley, Colorado. The school was founded as the State Normal School in 1889. It began as a school to train teachers. Classes began in 1890. The school first offered a bachelor’s degree program in 1911. The institution was called Colorado State College from 1957 to 1970, when it became a university and adopted its present name.

Well-known graduates of the University of Northern Colorado include author James A. Michener, actors Greg Germann and Tamara Hayden, and playwright Stephen Dietz. The university’s athletic teams are called the Bears.
