Northern Illinois University

Northern Illinois University is a public institution of higher learning in DeKalb, Illinois. It was founded in 1895 as Northern Illinois State Normal School. It was elevated to university status in 1957 and received its present name at that time. Northern Illinois University commonly is known as NIU. Its sports teams are nicknamed the Huskies.

In addition to the main campus in DeKalb, NIU operates campuses in the Illinois communities of Hoffman Estates, Naperville, and Rockford. NIU has many research facilities, including the Center for Burma Studies and the Institute for Nano Science, Engineering, and Technology.
