Occidental College is a private, liberal arts college in Los Angeles. The college was founded in 1887 by a group of Presbyterian ministers and laymen. Since 1910, Occidental has not had an official association with any religion.
All first-year students at Occidental take part in the Cultural Studies program. This program exposes students to interdisciplinary and multicultural perspectives while they study fine arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences.
Well-known graduates of Occidental include civil rights leader Ernesto Galarza, poet Robinson Jeffers, and United States Cabinet members Robert H. Finch and Jack F. Kemp. President Barack Obama attended Occidental for two years before transferring to Columbia University. The college’s athletic teams are called the Tigers.
