Pacific, University of the, is a private institution of higher learning with its main campus in Stockton, California. University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law is in Sacramento, and its School of Dentistry is in San Francisco.
The University of the Pacific was founded in 1851 in Santa Clara as California Wesleyan College, California’s first chartered university. In 1871, the campus moved from Santa Clara to San Jose and became California’s first coeducational campus. The university dedicated its current location in 1925 and, in 1961, changed its name to the University of the Pacific.
Well-known alumni of the University of the Pacific include jazz musician Dave Brubeck, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, rock musician Chris Isaak, and Supreme Court justice Anthony M. Kennedy. The university’s athletic teams are called the Tigers.
