Pomona College is a private, independent liberal arts college in Claremont, California. Pomona is the founding member of The Claremont Colleges, an association of seven independent institutions. The other four undergraduate colleges in the consortium are Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College, and Scripps College. Students may take classes and use facilities at any of the schools without additional cost. The Claremont Colleges also includes two graduate schools: Claremont Graduate University and Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences.
Pomona was founded in 1887 by a group of Congregationalists who envisioned a liberal arts college similar to those in New England. Classes started in 1888 in a small house in Pomona, California. The next year, however, property in Claremont was donated to the school, and the college moved to that location. Since its founding, Pomona has been coeducational.
Notable graduates of Pomona include musician John Cage, actor Richard Chamberlain, singer Kris Kristofferson, and civil rights leader Myrlie Evers WiIliams. The college’s athletic teams are called the Sagehens.
