Puerto Rico, University of

Puerto Rico, University of, is the public system of higher education in Puerto Rico, a commonwealth of the United States. The university was founded in 1903, but most of the campuses became part of the university system in the 1960’s or 1970’s.

The university’s original campus, in Río Piedras, is the largest in the system. Since 1911, the university’s Mayagüez campus has served as a center for the teaching of engineering. Three campuses—Arecibo, Cayey, and Humacao—emphasize curriculums in the liberal arts and sciences. The medical sciences campus, in San Juan, offers a variety of programs in the health sciences.

The University of Puerto Rico has specialized technological campuses in Ponce and Bayamón. Undergraduate programs at Ponce include those in accounting, computer science, finance, and psychology. Bayamón awards degrees in such fields as business administration, computer science, electronics, and engineering technology.
