Saint Louis University

Saint Louis University is a private, Roman Catholic, Jesuit institution of higher learning in St. Louis, Missouri. St. Louis University was founded as St. Louis Academy by Bishop William DuBourg in 1818. It adopted its present name in 1832 when it became a university. St. Louis University was the first university established west of the Mississippi River. The university’s athletic teams are called the Billikens.

St. Louis University also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, offering both graduate and undergraduate courses. It was the first university in the United States to operate a free-standing university in Europe.

The university’s Parks College of Engineering and Aviation began in 1927 as a separate school called Parks Air College. It was the first federally certified college of aviation in the United States. Oliver Lafayette Parks, an aviator, founded the college for the instruction of aircraft designers, mechanics, and pilots. Parks donated the air college to the university in 1946.
