Samford University is a private, independent institution of higher learning in Birmingham, Alabama. It is the largest private university in Alabama. A group of Baptist leaders founded the university as Howard College in 1841. Classes began in 1842 at its first location in Marion, Alabama. The college moved to Birmingham in 1887. In 1957, it moved to its present location in the city. The school adopted its present name in 1965 when it became a university. Samford University is named for Frank Park Samford, a chairman of the Howard College Board of Trustees and one of the college’s most generous contributors. The university still has ties to the Baptist Church but admits students of all religious backgrounds. The university’s athletic teams are called the Bulldogs.
