San Diego State University

San Diego State University is one of the largest public universities in California. It was founded in 1897 as a teachers college called the Normal School. In 1921, it was reorganized and became a four-year State Teachers’ College. That same year, San Diego Junior College, a two-year school, was instituted as a branch of San Diego State University. It remained a branch until 1946. In 1960, San Diego State University joined the California State Colleges system and, in 1971, it received university status. There is a branch campus in Calexico.

The athletic teams at San Diego State are called the Aztecs. Well-known alumni of San Diego State include former National Football League coach Joe Gibbs, baseball player Tony Gwynn, Hollywood producer Kathleen Kennedy, and astronaut Ellen Ochoa.
