San Diego, University of

San Diego, University of, is a private, Roman Catholic institution of higher learning in California. Charles F. Buddy, the first bishop of San Diego, helped found the university in 1949. The school, then called the College for Men and School of Law, opened in 1954. It adopted its present name in 1972 when it united with the San Diego College for Women. The university’s athletic teams are called the Toreros.
