San Francisco, University of, is a private, Roman Catholic institution of higher learning in California. It is affiliated with the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The university became San Francisco’s first institution of higher learning. A Jesuit priest, Anthony Maraschi, founded St. Ignatius Academy in 1855. The school was chartered as St. Ignatius College in 1859. The university adopted its present name in 1930.
The university’s athletic teams are called the Dons. Well-known alumni of the University of San Francisco include basketball player Bill Russell and professional football executive Pete Rozelle.
