Sewanee: The University of the South is a private, coeducational institution of higher education in Sewanee, Tennessee, operated by the Episcopal Church. The University of the South was founded in 1857 by bishops of the Episcopal Church who wanted to create a school, for Southern students, that focused on theological studies. In 1878, the School of Theology was officially organized as a seminary of the Episcopal Church. The school’s official name is the University of the South, but it is known as Sewanee. The university is famous for the natural beauty of its campus in a mountainous area of southeastern Tennessee. The university’s athletic teams are called the Tigers.
