Southern Illinois University is a public institution of higher learning made up of two schools in Carbondale and Edwardsville, Illinois. The university was founded at Carbondale in 1869 as Southern Illinois Normal University. In 1947, its name was changed to Southern Illinois University. The campus at Edwardsville was founded in 1957.
Sports teams of the Carbondale campus are nicknamed the Salukis, and those of the Edwardsville campus are the Cougars. Well-known graduates of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale include actors James Belushi and Dennis Franz; basketball great Walt Frazier; and Donald F. McHenry, former head of the United States delegation to the United Nations.
