Stevens Institute of Technology is a private, independent university in Hoboken, New Jersey. It is named for a family of American engineers. John Stevens designed the first steam locomotive built in the United States. His sons Edwin and John Cox Stevens were members of the group that built and raced the schooner America, the first winner of the trophy now known as the America’s Cup. When Edwin Stevens died in 1868, his will provided funds and land for establishment of a school of engineering on the family estate. Stevens Institute of Technology opened in 1870. The university is home to several research centers.
The university’s athletic teams are called the Ducks. Well-known graduates of the university include the artist Alexander Calder and the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Frederick Reines.
