Temple University is a public institution of higher learning in Philadelphia. It was founded in 1884 by Russell Hermann Conwell, a Baptist minister. The school was chartered as Temple College in 1888. It became Temple University in 1907. In 1965, the university became part of Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth System of Higher Education.
Temple operates campuses throughout Pennsylvania. The university also operates campuses overseas.
The sport teams of the main campus are nicknamed the Owls. Well-known Temple graduates include American Medical Association president Joseph Boyle, screenwriter Richard Brooks, comedians Bill Cosby and Bob Saget, and sociologist Robert K. Merton.
