Trinity College

Trinity College is a private, independent liberal arts college in Hartford, Connecticut. Trinity College traces its beginnings to a college for men called Washington College. The Connecticut General Assembly chartered it in 1823. The college was affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Classes began in 1824 in the basement of a Hartford church. The college moved to its first campus in 1825. It adopted its present name in 1845. In 1872, the state of Connecticut bought Trinity College’s land and made it the site of the state Capitol. The college moved to its present location in 1878. It began to break its ties to the Episcopal Church in 1889. The college first admitted women to its undergraduate programs in the late 1960’s. Notable alumni of Trinity College include playwright Edward Albee and journalist George Will.
