Tulsa, University of

Tulsa, University of, is a private institution of higher learning in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The church founded the university, then called the Presbyterian School for Indian Girls, in 1882. At that time, it was a small boarding school in Muskogee, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). In 1894, it began to offer undergraduate degrees. The school then became the Henry Kendall College, named for a Presbyterian missionary. Financial difficulties forced the college to move to Tulsa in 1907. The university adopted its present name in 1920.

The university’s athletic teams are called the Golden Hurricane. Well-known graduates of the university include Senator James M. Inhofe of Oklahoma; Steve Largent, a professional football player who later became a United States congressman from Oklahoma; and golfer Nancy Lopez.
