Union Institute & University

Union Institute & University is an institution of higher education in the United States. It was founded in 1964 as a partnership between a number of colleges and universities, including Hofstra University and Sarah Lawrence, Antioch, and Bard colleges. Originally named the Union for Experimenting Colleges and Universities (UECU), the school was accredited in 1985 by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. UECU changed its name to The Union Institute in 1989, and to Union Institute & University in 2001.

The national university focuses on older adult students. It attempts to provide programs flexible enough to allow students to meet family and professional commitments while earning a degree.

With headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, the university has regional centers in North Miami Beach, Florida; Los Angeles, Sacramento, and San Diego, California; and Montpelier and Brattleboro, Vermont. For students who do not live in these areas, the school offers the Center for Distance Learning. Students can earn bachelor’s degrees through this program by using the Internet and computer bulletin boards to access classroom materials.
