Wayne State University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Detroit. The university was founded in 1868 as the Detroit Medical College. In 1933, the Detroit Teachers College and the College of the City of Detroit merged with the Detroit Medical College to become Wayne University. The university was named for Wayne County, in which it is located. It adopted its present name in 1956. The university also operates extension centers throughout the Detroit metropolitan area. Well-known graduates include physician and astronaut Jerry Linenger.
