Wesleyan University is a private, independent institution of higher learning in Middletown, Connecticut. A group of Methodists led by clergyman Wilbur Fisk founded the university in 1831. It is named for English minister John Wesley, one of the founders of Methodism. Although the university was founded by Methodist leaders, it is not affiliated with the Methodist church.
Well-known graduates of Wesleyan University include novelists Robin Cook and Robert Ludlum. Before he became president of the United States, Woodrow Wilson was Wesleyan’s first non-Methodist professor.
