Western Michigan University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The university was founded in 1903 as Western State Normal School. It served as a school to train elementary school teachers. In 1927, the institution was renamed Western State Teachers College. The school was designated a university in 1957. Western Michigan University’s Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine opened in late 2014 with its first class of medical students. The medical school is located on the new W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus in downtown Kalamazoo. Well-known graduates of Western Michigan University include actor Tim Allen and Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer. The university’s athletic teams are called the Broncos.
