Wheaton College

Wheaton College is a private, liberal arts college in Norton, Massachusetts. It was one of the first institutions in the United States dedicated to the higher education of women. Judge Laban Wheaton established the school in 1834 as a memorial to his daughter Eliza Wheaton Strong, who died that year. The institution, then called Wheaton Female Seminary, opened its doors in 1835 and was incorporated in 1837. The distinguished educator Mary Lyon, who later founded Mount Holyoke College, designed the curriculum to provide an education equal to that of men’s schools. In 1912, the state of Massachusetts incorporated the school as Wheaton College.

In 1988, Wheaton College began to admit male students. Notable graduates of Wheaton include television journalist Lesley Stahl and Christine Todd Whitman, the first woman governor of New Jersey.
