Wichita State University is a public, state-supported institution of higher learning in Wichita, Kansas. The university was founded in 1886 as Fairmount College. It was affiliated with the Congregational Church. Fairmount College went through financial difficulties, and the city of Wichita purchased the school in 1926. It then became known as the Municipal University of Wichita. The university adopted its present name in 1964 when it joined the Kansas Board of Regents system.
Wichita State University is known for its National Institute for Aviation Research. The university’s athletic teams are called the Shockers.
