Anastasia, Grand Duchess (1901-1918), was the youngest daughter of Czar Nicholas II of Russia. She was born on June 5, 1901. Grand Duchess Anastasia was killed with other members of her family in Yekaterinburg on July 17, 1918. The family had been confined to a cellar by Bolsheviks following the October Revolution in 1917.
There was originally some doubt as to which members of the family died at Yekaterinburg. As a result, many women claimed to be Anastasia, partly in an effort to obtain the Romanov fortune held in Swiss banks. The doubts about Anastasia’s death have been discredited by a variety of inquiries. DNA tests in the 1990’s proved that the remains found in a shallow grave in Yekaterinburg were those of the Romanov family.
