Astronomical unit (AU) is the unit used by astronomers to measure distances within the solar system. One astronomical unit is the average distance between Earth and the sun, about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers). The distance, for example, between Jupiter and the sun averages about 5 AU. Pluto’s average distance from the sun is about 39 AU.
