Austin, Herbert (1866-1941), Baron Austin of Longbridge, designed and built some of the first automobiles in the United Kingdom. Austin was born on Nov. 8, 1866, in Little Missenden, Buckinghamshire, England. He served his apprenticeship as an engineer in Melbourne, Australia, and then worked for the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine Company. After his return to England, he designed a car for the Wolseley company. In 1905, he formed the Austin Motor Company. His most famous car, the Austin Seven, came out in 1922. He was made a baron in 1936. Baron Austin died on May 23, 1941.
