Bailey, David (1938-…), a British photographer and film director, rose to fame as a fashion photographer in the 1960’s. He also gained a reputation for his portraits and nudes. Bailey later became known as a director of films and commercials, and as a writer on photography.
David Royston Bailey was born on Jan. 2, 1938, in London. A self-taught photographer, Bailey began taking pictures for Vogue magazine in 1960. He started directing television commercials in 1966 and directed his first documentary film in 1968. The National Portrait Gallery in London staged an exhibition of his work in 1971. Bailey’s photographic books include Another Image: Papua New Guinea (1975), David Bailey’s Trouble and Strife (1980), and Imagine (1985).
