Baker-Finch, Ian

Baker-Finch, Ian (1960-…), an Australian golfer, won the British Open Championship in 1991. He completed the course at Royal Birkdale, near Southport, Merseyside, northern England, with a total score of 272, becoming the first Australian player to win the British Open since 1965. In 1992, Baker-Finch won the Vines Classic, and in 1993, he won the Australian Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Championship. In 1994, he was one of the top 10 finishers in the U.S. Masters Tournament.

Ian Michael Baker-Finch was born on Oct. 24, 1960, in Nambour, Queensland. He became a professional golfer in 1979 and gained his first major professional tournament win in 1983, when he became New Zealand Open champion. He won the New South Wales Open in 1984; the Victorian Open and the Scandinavian Enterprise Open in 1985; the Australian Masters in 1988; and the Four Tours World Championship in Japan in 1990. Since 1998, Baker-Finch has been a golf commentator on American television.
