Berwick, Treaty of (1639), ended an attempt by King Charles I of England to force Scotland to accept the English Prayer Book and English forms of worship. Scottish and English armies met near Berwick, but representatives of both sides concluded the treaty without a battle. The Scots agreed to disband their army. But Charles could not make them accept his control over their religion.
