Berwick-upon-Tweed

Berwick-upon-Tweed is a town in the Northumberland Unitary Authority, on the River Tweed. It takes its name from the port town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The town’s industries include farming, fishing, printing, light engineering, and textile manufacturing. The old part of the town is walled. Berwick was claimed as part of Scotland in 1018. After changing hands many times between England and Scotland, it was granted to England in 1482. King James I of England made it a free borough (a borough with some self-government) in 1604.
