Bonython was a noted South Australian family that was prominent in educational, cultural, and charity affairs in South Australia for many years.
Sir John Langdon Bonython
(1848-1939) was a journalist for, and eventually the sole owner and editor of, the Advertiser, the Adelaide newspaper. He served as editor from 1884 to 1929. In his time, he was one of South Australia’s most influential figures. A wealthy man, his generous donations benefited many institutions, such as the University of Adelaide.

(1875-1960), son of Sir John Langdon Bonython, became lord mayor of Adelaide.
John Langdon Bonython
(1905-1992), the eldest son of Sir John Lavington Bonython, became a lawyer. He was founding chairman of Santos Ltd., a large oil and natural gas company. He served as chairman from 1954 to 1981.

(1920-2011), also a son of Sir John Lavington Bonython, became known first as a speedway racer and later as an art gallery director.
