Bowen, Sir George Ferguson

Bowen, Sir George Ferguson (1821-1899), a British statesman, was the first governor of Queensland, Australia, from 1859 to 1868. He was governor of New Zealand from 1868 to 1873 and of Victoria, Australia, from 1873 to 1879. Bowen was later governor of the island of Mauritius and of Hong Kong. Bowen was born in County Donegal, in Ireland, on Nov. 2, 1821. He was knighted in 1856. He died in Brighton, England, on Feb. 21, 1899.
