Boyle, Danny

Boyle, Danny (1956-…), is a British motion-picture director. He is known for his dramas, thrillers, and science-fiction films. Boyle won an Academy Award as best director for the romantic drama Slumdog Millionaire (2008). The film tells the story of an orphaned teenager from the slums of Mumbai, India, who becomes a contestant on an Indian version of the television game show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” The film won seven other Academy Awards, including best picture.

Daniel Boyle was born on Oct. 20, 1956, in Manchester, England. He began his directing career in television. Boyle’s first feature film was the thriller Shallow Grave (1994). He first won critical praise and popular success with his 1996 film Trainspotting, a story about heroin addicts in a poor area of Edinburgh, Scotland. The film was followed by the sequel T2 Trainspotting (2017).

Boyle’s other films include the romantic drama A Life Less Ordinary (1997), the adventure story The Beach (2000), the science-fiction thrillers 28 Days Later (2003) and Sunshine (2007), the comedy Millions (2004), and the drama 127 Hours (2010). His later movies include the thriller Trance (2013), the biographical film Steve Jobs (2015), and the comical fantasy Yesterday (2019).
